Never mind. I was able to get connected to a roaming partner in the US and I was able to receive an SMS and get my account established. For 5 Euro, I was able to extend the life of the sim for another year.

I thought that it expired in 12 months, but when I added my credit, it did indeed push me out to another 2 years. What a great deal!
