So this is the answer I got from 3:
"If you buy vouchers then the minimum top-up amount available is £10. If you top-up using a card through My3 only then the minimum top-up available is £5. After topping you can convert the £5 to the Add-on that gives 500 MB of data valid for 30 days." I only need data, and only for a week, so the £5 Add-on is a great option for me. Let us know if you have been able to get the sim card for free and top up with only £5.
