Hmm, then it must be that the software can't detect the modem at all.

I'll see if they're willing to try my dongle out, because I can't take my laptop in (an hour or two boat trip).

Either that or wait until my last two nights in Milano.

Like I said, Mifi seems like a better way. Or maybe an unlocked Nokia or Android with fast processors and RAM to run hotspot software.
