When Skype on 3 was launched, SkypeIn and SkypeOut were not supported. I believe this may have changed a bit, but I'm not sure quite how much, as I haven't experimented with it at all. So articles from nearly 2 years ago aren't necessarily helpful

Reading Skype forums occasionally, I get the impression that the level of knowledge amongst customers or support staff is rather variable. Much of the confusion arises from the ambiguities or overlaps in Skype's descriptions. For example, Skype ToGo, or a name fairly similar, is just a callthrough system which does depend on paying for the call to the access number.

I can find info that I can use my E51 with Skype, and that I can't. Some phones only work with all of 3's features of they supplied it themselves, probably due to customised software, and I haven't bothered figuring out what applies to mine.

So it's worth looking into, but collect quite a bit of info before you think you know what's going on.

Skype-In doesn't work:

If anyone is in the UK, on 3, and willing to try and experiment, send me a private message. I have opensky on my Asterisks box which will connect to Skype. It would be interesting to see if those connections work.

stu - if you have skypein then configure your skype to forward your incoming skypein calls to other skype user (insted of forward to real number with skypeout), then log off your skype and open the other skype account you forwading the call, now call to your skypein number, if its forward the call to this new skype account it will work on the 3 mobile as well. (i hope)

It's basically the same for me (apart from the UMTS bit, which isn't here yet). I have a UK 056 landline number at voipfone.co.uk (no monthly charge), and a mobile/VOIP phone (Nokia E51). When I'm at home or elsewhere with good wi-fi, I receive the call on the wi-fi - no costs. When I go out of range of wi-fi, it has failover to pstn - automatically diverts to whatever number I've specified, usually my local mobile in whatever country. (not every voip provider has failover to pstn, so for some you may have to use a divert if no answer or set it manually).

In addition, I have a US ipkall.com number pointing to the voipfone SIP address, so I receive calls to my US number the same way. (plus a NZ 2talk voip number). So, when in range of wi-fi there are no charges to receive calls on my US, UK and NZ numbers (unlike Skype, no monthly charges). With an unlimited data plan that could do VOIP I'd also get calls on the mobile for free (should be available here soon).

For the remaining calls, I pay the divert from the voip company to various mobiles, which is where picking one with good rates would help (callwithus.com is not too bad). But it's only a percentage of calls, so doesn't matter that much. Main thing: nothing (apart from keeping my local prepaid mobiles alive) has any monthly charges or ongoing costs. As I have very low usage (despite being really easy to reach!) that works for me.

I manged to run a test call from a Skype for Asterisk trunk to a 3 UK SkypePhone... Worked like a charm. I didn't bother to add a DID to the setup, but there's no reason why it wouldn't work.

Struan, what did you end up deciding to do? I am in exactly your position right now, too (moving from the US to UK, want people to keep in touch with the old number).
