I share your concerns about recharging either. However, suggest you consider the initial cost of the SIM and compare it to a new purchase.
If you are going to mulitple countries, you will want an international card. If you will be in one country predominantly, you might consider a SIM for that country. After reading the new reply in the above post it seems United Mobile might be coming through with new plans. I will just wait and see what it offered.

I have a Telestial (EKIT) Passport SIM. Lots of countries with free incoming calls. They cost $29 with $10 of air time.
