Many prepaid SIMs permit roaming in Canada. You can send an SMS once a year to keep most European SIMs active. You can also top up those that don't (e.g. Orange). I have a fantastic Orange number (0796 ababaaa) so I put a tenner on it once a year to keep it going.

CA: SaskTel, Wind postpaid; Rogers, Bell postpaid iPad flex plans; US: T-Mobile postpaid data, prepaid voice; PureTalk (AT&T MVNO) prepaid voice/data; AT&T prepaid iPad plan

Hardware: Too much but notably iPhone 5, iPad Mini Retina LTE, Moto G LTE (N.A. version), iPhone 4. All unlocked.

Don't forget, you could transfer the number to another prepaid carrier to save having to top it up as often. I don't know offhand if any carrier is particularly good value for North American roaming, though.

Me, I keep an album of dead SIM cards; since they fit in the slots for business cards, it's not hard to do. I've got 60-70 of them, although a disproportionate number are old Heyah, Vodafone DE, and TMO UK and US SIMs. Even so, a fun collection, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here with one.

Current DE: Vodafone, Netzklub; PL: Klucz, Virgin; UK: Giffgaff, Vodafone; US: T-Mobile; CA: 7-Eleven; IT: Vodafone; UA: Kyivstar; FR: Bouygues; GR: Vodafone
Former DE: Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2, Blauworld, 01051mobile, Solomo, Lycamobile, Simyo, Congstar, Fonic, Edeka Mobile, Lidl Mobile; PL: Heyah, Era, Virgin, Sami Swoi, Orange, POP, iPlus, Carrefour Mova, Telepin Mobi, Play, Lycamobile, T-Mobile; UK: Vodafone, T-Mobile, Virgin; US: T-Mobile, AT&T, Lycamobile; CZ: Vodafone, Oskar; ES: Lebara; GR: Vodafone, Wind; UA: Vodafone; IL: Orange; TR: Turkcell

this is impossible in Italy: you have to refill sim card once a year or it expires

As someone mentions in an above post, check the terms and conditions with each specific company you hold a sim card for.

Some networks (EG: Vodafone UK as well as most other UK networks) require 'activity' (e.g: making a call or sending a sms) every 180 days to keep the account active.

Other networks (EG: Vodafone GR as well as all other Greek networks) have a specific date of expiration. This is usually 1 year from activation (although some promotional packs have different specificed validity) or 1 year after each recharge is applied. This means your account will expire on this date and you will loose any unused balance.
