1. Ecuador uses 850 - same as lots of the Cingular/ATT in U.S.
2. Some quad band phones can be set to restrict network searches to look for only 900/1800 or 850/1900. If set to look for only 900/1800 it won't find 850.

Make use of T-M's UMA/wifi free calling from any place in the world with access to wifi. I use an LG G6, wife an S7)
A/o Oct 20, 2013 no need for intl prepaid as T-Mobile U.S. includes voice roaming at 20¢/min (in and out)., unlimited text (in and out), and unlimited data in 140+ countries.

My Plan -[6 lines] U.S. T-Mobile unlimited minutes (incoming and outgoing), unlimited text, fast data on each line. that $145/mo. total! . (In U.S. no surcharge for calling a cell.) If a line exceeds 2G of data in a month, pay $10 more for that line. [That only happens a couple times/year.

................ nothing more, no ref to frequency or 1900, etc., no ref on what the choices are under band selection.

My P-280 allowed one to switch between 1900 and 900/1800.

If it was working in US, it was probably on 850/1900.

What is IMHO somehow reasonable since AFAIK there are no 850/1800 or 900/1900 dual-band networks anywhere . But if there are areas where 850/900 and/or 1800/1900 coverage overlaps, it wouldn't be that good...

1800 & 1900 reuse the same channel numbers and would be very hard to implement together, except maybe on some island somewhere. I don't know. 850 has a different set of channel numbers, so the two can run quite nicely together in the same area. In theory calls could even be handed back and forth between 900 & 850 like they are between 900 & 1800.
