Yes, sending SMS to landlines is possible in Poland too, but GSM to landline SMSes cost usually 5-6 times more than regular SMSes, probably because of text2voice conversion and possible multiple attempts of delivery.
But the most important thing is that they cannot be sent abroad! So I think you're right that they must reveal the "secret" GSM number anyway
