Actually you can get free AT&T data roaming worldwide on a Kindle 3G in the experimental web browser when not in range of wi-fi. Have done this to get gmail, check-in for flights, check weather maps/forecasts (important when I was in Bermuda when a hurricane came close).
Plus I can get local or home newspapers, books, etc. over the same data connection (handy because they take up space and weight in luggage if not in electronic format).
Granted this is an e-ink monochrome display, you can't open multiple windows, etc.
