No, he chose to just use a US#. I did enquire when I bought the Piranha SIM last year, and a Canadian number would be 1.50 pounds per month with a 5 pounds setup fee.

If you use the Piranha SIM and are not getting SMS to the UK phone number: lets gather some data and send it to Piranha.

If you are in the USA, please specify which network you are on.
It will be a few days before I switch networks.
Today I tried sending SMS to both numbers
from a T-Mobile MVNO and an AT&T MVNO.
I am currently on the AT&T network.
Piranha received both SMSs from the AT&T MVNO. [H2O]
It only received the US SMS from the T-Mobile MVNO. [Ptel]

davidtheprof: Where are you [and what network] when you are not receiving SMS on the UK phone number
and what networks are sending the SMS if you know?

Interesting... Piranha had told me to expect problems with SMS for the UK number, didn't think it might be a function of the sending network.
In US I'm T-mobile, but rarely use it here, mostly when in UK and other European countries. In UK I prefer 3UK network because Piranha is direct dial on them, but phone does not always default to that, often goes to Vodafone - and sometimes I switch manually trying to get data signal. But have not tested the various networks to see which one might work with SMS. Nor in other European countries. It's a time consuming pain to select networks manually. Not traveling for a while, so won't be able to test (though could replicate your US test, if I get the time!)

Actually, switched today to do the test on T-Mobile network.

This afternoon I tried sending SMS to both numbers
from a T-Mobile MVNO and an AT&T MVNO.
I am currently on the T-Mobile network.
Same results as my previous message. (#322)

Default Piranha texting issues - 06-07-2014, 23:10

From another thread:

What is the nature of your issues?
I just did some testing.

While on the T-Mobile network, I could send SMS from a T-Mobile and an AT&T MVNO to the US phone number.
I could not from the T-Mobile MVNO to the UK phone number but could from the AT&T MVNO.

While on the AT&T network, I could not send an SMS from the T-Mobile MVNO to the UK phone number but could from the AT&T MVNO.

When I first tried to send SMS to the US number from both networks it did not work.
The second time I tried I could send SMS from a T-Mobile
and an AT&T MVNO to the US phone number.
Flaky? I had just switched to the AT&T network when I tried the first time.

Do you have any experience that fits these pattersns?

I have not tested in such detail, but my experience has been that I can text out, and it shows the US number, but incoming to the UK number does not work. That's a pain when I'm in UK/Europe, I want it to look and act like a local number.
Not sure I get what it would mean to be on TMob and use another MVNO? sorry, I'm not an expert on the technical side.

The networks in the US are T-Mobile and AT&T.
Piranha is set to one or the other.
When I try to send texts, I am using an MVNO that uses either
T-Mobile's or AT&T's network.

Piranha Mobile ‏@Piranha_Mobile

Piranha reduces Voice/Data in all EU with more reductions in Asia, South America to come. Check new not to be beaten PAYG rates

They (still) don't beat Truphone's rates in Truphone EU countries (UK, Germany, Spain, Poland, Netherlands) especially with free incoming calls in those countries and $.09 per minute/SMS/MB.

In the rest of the EU, it's the same as before: mixed, with Piranha usually having the edge. For example, Portugal:

Piranha
Outgoing: $.16 Incoming: $.06 SMS out: $.14 MB: $.16

Truphone
Outgoing: $.25 Incoming: $.08 SMS out: $.09 MB: $.25

I have both so I'll continue to carry both. If you have neither and are considering one or the other, if you'll be spending any fair amount of time in a Truphone country, going with Truphone is a no-brainer.

Agreed Truphones 5 EU countries are great rates, but in the rest of EU+ other countries in Europe Piranhas rates are better. I too use both cards
