While I prefer to use my own handsets, Virgin Mobile Canada is not a bad deal for Canada.

Another method is to use a good calling card from the hotel room or wherever you are to dial out. Onesuite has local numbers in major Canadian and US cities. Also Enjoyprepaid. Or there is always the ATT or MCI route.

Thanks for input. Rogers looks good but probably would use less than $100 of airtime a year so the Rogers annual card or monthly refills probably wouldn't be worth it at this point. At this point I will likely just use United Mobile/Riiing or maybe Hop and my Costco AT&T prepaid calling card. Other prepaid calling cards you suggested might be good if I get more wordy on the phone (or I could buy a throw away prepaid calling card in Toronto with low rates). Other possibility is hotel I stayed at had free Wi-Fi. Could use a web-based phone service that has a prepaid card(Skype-Out, Juno, etc.).

"While I prefer to use my own handsets, Virgin Mobile Canada is not a bad deal for Canada." I agree, rates look good and they have good customer service for my US Virgin Mobile handset (which also worked nicely in PR and USVI last year), but don't think worth my getting another handset for Canadian use because of low call volume and occassional need.
