Thumbs up Korea - 06-06-2012, 02:53

Hello,

I will be on business an hour and a half north of Seoul in Korea. I am hoping to bring my iPhone 4S and have use a local prepaid SIM card.

Any recommendations about carriers?

What about Data?

I am coming from the US.

I'll write some info about prepaid SIM card of South Korea.

1. kt olleh SIMple Charge

kt Expat Blog :: Using your device has never been SIMpler?olleh SIMple!

* There are "Prepaid" packages of kt, but olleh SIMple is cheaper and also provides longer validity.

* Data plans exists: kt Expat Blog :: Prepaid Rate Plans (Prepaid Data Plus package)
* There are olleh SIMple data packages and its price plan is the same as Prepaid Data Plus package.
* kt offers unlimited olleh WiFi access to data plan users, except for 100MB plan.

* There is no international roaming.

2. SK 7mobile

SK telink 7 mobile (click "English" on the top-right)

* MVNO service which provides cheap international call rates.

* Prepaid data: 0.01 KRW per 0.5KB (20 KRW/MB)
* WiFi: 110 KRW/day (access to T wifi zone; T wifi (Korean page))

* There is no international roaming.

Warning: I've read that many wifi nets block VOIP in South Korea.

Well, it is not true most of the cases.

A certain level of control of MNOs over Mobile VoIP exists on their 3G/4G network, not on WiFi.

In my knowledge, there's no LTE PAYG plan yet.

Most of subscribers are using post-paid plans in Korea, so PAYG plans are not competitive now.

This summer a niece will be traveling to S. Korea to visit a schoolmate. I was looking at KT's olleh rates and it seems pretty clear except data, which is priced at ₩ 0.01 per unit. I have no idea what the unit is. http://global.olleh.com/eng/mobile/p...lansLinkUrl.do
