Existing customers also do not have to commit to the €6/month for the next 3 months, so it benefits even you. If you will not be in Spain until the 6th of September, and provided you have credit on it now, then this credit will not be charged the €18 for June, July and August. Just make sure you use the card enough in September to avoid the charge in that month too!
