The SIM can be removed, but the phone has taken SIM-locking to the next level. Even other AT&T SIMs can't be used in it (although iPhone SIMs can be used in other phones). Bottom line - it's not the phone for someone looking to use it in Europe without paying exorbitant roaming rates.
