One of my phones was a "US TriBand" (850/1800/1900) but it worked fine with Virgin as I believe they are only 1800. If you don't need the phones to coordinate arrivals (as I did) then, yes do buy the SIMs when you arrive. If you are like we were -- groups arriving at different times and needing the phones to meet up, then order them ahead of time -- its not all *that* much more expensive.
