They come with a balance of 1€ each and are valid 1 month.
Within that month you need to top up (possible via bank transfer) to extend the validity to 6 month.
I suppose a top up of 1ct (!) is enough to extend the validity, as this is the typical o2 procedure.

Rates are not too bad: 15ct/min to all german networks and landline.
