Default Going to Italy need to figure out how to get internet (Data CARD) PLEASE HELP - 18-06-2007, 22:59

Great forum btw. Anyways I am going to Italy the 29th of this month and need internet service on my laptop-- I am going to get an unlocked data card on eBay but then I am clueless on what to do from there. I was originally just gonna order the service from my US carrier-- Cingular but they want like $150 a month for 100 MB of usage. Can someone help me find the best solution and how to get it

Thanks,
Adam

Look at the many threads dealing with Wind prepaid data. Just make sure that your data card has 1800 MHz.

You need to follow these links:
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/italy.html
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/italia/wind.html
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1085
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1044

What you need to do is:
1. Get a GSM/GPRS/EDGE data card that supports 1800 MHz.
2. Get a Wind SIM card and add credit to it.
3. Activate one of the high usage data plans.
4. Set up network parameters on card/software to work with Wind.

The links above should have all the information you need, except maybe how to set up the exact model data card you use.

1800 could be not enough, 900 EGSM can be very useful too. W-CDMA 2100 could be helpful too, as well as EDGE support.

Of course, a data card with 900, 1800 & 2100 would be best. My point is that with Wind you need to have 1800 MHz.

It's not totally true, there are many places where Wind has 900 only coverage, usually on EGSM channels. Of course if he'll stay in bigger towns you need 1800.

I ordered a great unlocked data card on eBay. Now i need to get a sim by next Friday when I leave or I guess I'll just get one there preferably get one before I leave so if anyone could tell me where I might be able to purchase one in time. Also all the sites are in Italian how do I activate it and select/pay for my data plan

Thanks,
Adam

If you plan to use Wind, the sim-card is automatically activated before 24 hours and the 4242 "speaks" also in English, just choose it the first time you use it. The 155.it is indeed in Italian only.
I think it's easier and better if you buy it directly here in Italy. All information about rates is on this website, in English.
If you need any help you know where to find us

What is the 2100 coverage like in Italy? Also, is there any restrictions on tethering?

Is there also a FAQ somewhere on codice fiscale?
