On 15th July I received the following bilingual e-mail from UM (German part skipped)

United Mobile with five new roaming countries

Dear United Mobile customer

With your United Mobile SIM card incoming calls are free of charge in over 80 countries and making calls worldwide start from 0,39 ?/Min. Two good news just in time before the big summer travel season starts:

1 st good news
From now on, incoming calls are free of charge in Taiwan.

2 nd good news
For only 0,19 ?/Min you can receive calls in Estonia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua.

You can download our actual rateplan from our website www.united-mobile.com or use the online tariff calculator for your quick reference.

I wish you beautiful summer time.

Best regards,
Sven Donhuysen, CEO & President

P.S.
On July 13rd we started on eBay the auction to find the United Mobile model for our new international advertising campaign.

My personal hint for you:
Recharge your SIM card on time before your travel starts.

It seems to me the biggest country still not being served by UM is New Zealand; I just don't understand why they haven't been able to come to an agreement with somebody there.

It seems that UM added one more country. Does anyone has any idea which it was;

UM also works in some unlisted countries. I've tested it twice with a 3G phone in Japan. Problem was that each time I got a different rate. So there's no saying how much it will cost.

Japan is listed as a roaming partner for United Mobile's underlying carrier Mobilkom Liechtenstein. List of their roaming partners: Link to FL1 roaming partners List is not perfect though; I used Digicel/Cingular on St. Kitts in March and only Cable and Wireless is listed for that island.

Satphone: InMarSat
Broadband US Wireless Data: AT&T postpaid, Sprint (Karma Mobility prepaid)

I spoke with UM 4 months ago and they told me that they are not listing Japan only because they prefer actually to give a list of GSM providers to their customers.

Hmm, that's strange. Having more coverage is always better than having less coverage. Of course, they should clearly say that 3G phone is required for roaming in Japan....

This is the problem, I suppose... they didn't test a lot of 3G handsets with their simcards (I think that the oldest ones have a lot of troubles...) and so they prefer to have less coverage and... less problems too :P

Well, I forgot about their fancy callback . They may have to perform many compatibility tests. I suppose it might not be worth to compare with possible profits from services offered in Japan
