Be aware that T-Mobile's UMTS network (which they call it "4G" since it supports HSPA+) runs on the AWS band (1700 MHz for uplink and 2100 MHz for downlink) which very few European phones support (UMTS2100 is not compatible!). So your colleague may be confined to their GSM network and EDGE speed.
