When this happened to me last October I tried but failed to get any response from United Mobile customer support. More recently, I tried again. This time I received an unhelpful email to the effect that 1) United Mobile should work with my Motorola v190, and if it didn't I must be doing something wrong, and 2) there was nothing they could do. The tone of the message I received was unfriendly and condescending. United Mobile is a crappy company, and why it continues to enjoy a good reputation is a mystery.

There are two possible solutions for your problem, both of which will cost you money: 1) buy a Motorola v3 or a Nokia 6610, both of which work with my United Mobile sim, or 2) buy a sim from RangeRoamer or Cherry Mobile, both of which include a Motorola v220 in their list of compatible phones. These aren't very good solutions because you're still out some $69 for United Mobile's useless product, but I can't think of anything else.
