Help Remembering an Int'l Sim
 

There were some postings for an global sim card from the UK (I think they were a rebranded o2 card)... the costs were higher then most other global sim cards discussed here, but the card seemed reliable from what I read. Not a lot of info but anyone remember which card this was?

My problem is I have a TravelSim and a UM+, neither of which is reliable for receiving calls. They both receive and work okay for making calls, but when the family calls one time from the US and the call will not go through, or rings and then disconnects upon answering... well, then I'm ready to spend a little bit more $$$ to get a reliable connection. Happened last night in Turkey on my UM+ card. Family tried twice, rang once, answered once, disconnected once. Very weird.

Where have you had difficulty receiving on UM+? My experience has been they've been fairly reliable.....

This was Adana, Turkey. I haven't used it much relying on my TravelSim card. But it seems that is getting less reliable for incoming calls and really difficult with Enlinea callback.

I travel pretty much throughout Europe, the Middle East, a few bits of Africa, much of Asia and from time to time Australia and NZ. So I need something that works in most of those places and is reliable in most of those places. It's been tough but now I'm thinking I'll just pay a bit more for the reliability. My primary carrier at home is Verizon but their "world phones" are insanely priced as well as their cost per minute. I mean insane. Sheesh.....

I too had issues with callback from CBW and Enlinea and UM+ products. On the other hand standalone UM+ worked great for me.

In the end I setup my own Asterisk callback server triggered by wap.

The card you're remembering is from Mobal (www.mobalrental.com). It's a rebranded O2 SIM that is postpaid per-use charged to your credit card; no minimums or monthly fees. I've kept one as a backup for 3 years now and while expensive it has always been reliable.

Aparently UM have problems with their UM+ product, it isnt reliable. But their UM 423 number is very reliable by comparison.

The problem with the 423 number is that Liechtenstein has a large sex line industry. There are so many complaints about it that other networks simply block all calls to Liechtenstein numbers. Happend in the USA where all networks blocked calls to Liechtenstein at one stage, but now only Cingular blocks. I have heard that Tim has been blocking recently too, and maybe Byges telecom in France. (Any feedback from anyone if I am correct on this as I have heard some have problems and some don't)

So this is what I was told by UM support! But really? What the hell kind of reason is that? I looked on google for Liechtenstein phone line sex scandles, call blocking etc - couldnt find anything

There is a number range in Liechtenstein (+42366) that is used for several services, like televoting, membership in various sites and so on. These calls generate revenue for the the called party and that is why they are used. UM has its numbers on this range (+423663) so it is logical that calls would be very expensive. The Greek telecom Organization has increased calls to this range to 1.9 euros/min!!
Most of these go to the called party.
I would also like to remind that many cheap voip carriers, like betamax, do not generally connect to this number range

I've also kept Mobal as a backup. The curious thing is that I've never been able to get it to work in Japan (yes, I was using a UMTS-2100 phone)
