satellite.me; new german mobile operator without simcards
 

I came across a new project of sipgate germany called satellite.me (www.satellite.me). It is a crossing between classic VOIP via app but including a german mobile number.

The app is only available for ios at the moment and gives you a phone number in this format: +49 15678 xxxxx. You will need a german adress to receive the confirmation letter with activation code to set up the app and number. You can find the app only in the German and US app store for the moment!

Included are 100 monthly minutes to 51 countries for free (landline and mobile) and there are plans for a unlimited option at EUR 4.95 montly to cover unlimited minutes to these 51 countries.

The app itself works fine, call quality is pretty solid but SMS can not be sent/received at the moment.

So, this would work as a VoIP service but have a mobile (premium) incoming number. I assume it's not actually a cellular phone but works over WiFi?

It works over wifi or cellular coverage. They claim it works with EDGE, 3G and 4G

Since my introductory post of satellite.me a lot happened. Finally, there is now a app for Android as well and they support port in of German numbers. Reachability of their numbers (prefix 0156 78xxxxxx) from all operators is fine now.

The basic free service still includes 100 outgoing Minutes to 64 countries, if you need more, there is a package for € 4.99 which gives unlimited minutes to these countries. It works reliable on mobile data, during my visit to China this summer, I did most of my calling through satellite.me, as my Koko-Mobile had problems with incoming calls...
