Which US plan for texting only?

My friend in the US says the only communication there with his acquaintances is by texting, no voice. Does he only has strange friends or is it the norm there? I don't know.

Anyways, assuming he does not need net or smartphone, only want to text his friends, what is his best plan?

You can list regional carries as well, though he travels a lot in country so countrywide coverage is a must.

T-Mobile has a $15/month plan with unlimited texting. Voice calls are $0.10/minute. No data.

How about obscure?

Odin Mobile

They have an unlimited text plan that is $10 with 150 voice minutes.
Not sure who underlying carrier is. $9.99 for SIM.

TelnaMobile includes free 1000 texts per month. Their plan is $20/year with all talk minutes being around 7c/min. Until T-Mobile switched me to an unlimited everything plan I used my TelnaMobile phone for texting.

Looks like MVNO on T-Mobile.

....just buy a SIM card and chose a plan. To be compatible, your phone must be either previously used with T-Mobile, or an unlocked GSM phone.

Another option could be Google Voice. If he is okay with only texting when on the Internet.

Odin are a T-Mobile USA MVNO... :)

international 11-01-2014 18:40

Thanks. Odin and T-mobile would be really helpful for my friend. He pays some $50 a month now.

But is it normal that in the US you don't talk on the phone only text? :)

HappyCamp 11-01-2014 18:43

Not applicable for your friend as they don't use Internet, but....

T-Mobile also has the "Wal-mart plan". $30 per month for unlimited texting, unlimited data (after 5GB of usage throttled to 2G speeds), and 100 minutes of voice minutes. This is the plan I use.

You can sign up for it at T-Mobile website or at Wal-mart. Can NOT sign up for it at a T-Mobile store.

Strangely, I can't find this plan on the T-Mobile site. (Mobile companies' sites are so nice to navigate)

Who is 'normal' in the USA?? Or California [where I live]?

I think 'young people' tend to text a lot.

There is no "normal" in the US. Older people tend to talk only, no text or Internet. ("I just want a phone, not that other junk.") Some young people text each other constantly and almost never talk on the phone. Some folks neither talk nor text but use the Internet constantly. Most people I know use all three. Most US customers have monthly plans with huge "buckets" of minutes, texts & data.

I see it here at the moment:

Not sure if it is something they try to promote.

Telna Mobile includes 1,000 US texts a month when you are in the US.

Jsharp618 05-02-2014 20:48

Most carriers in the US dont offer hardly any text only plans and if so limited on everything else. I think your best option is another MVNO of T-Mobile known as Solavei. Over T-Mobile's network for $30 a month will get you unlimited talk & text anywhere in the us on any GSM phone.

petergoogle 29-11-2014 23:59

GoSmart has a $25 plan with unlimited minutes and messages. (t-Mobile network)

schumi26 14-01-2015 08:06

Can NOT sign up for it at a T-Mobile store.

RafaelGoy 01-10-2019 12:43

Has T-Mobile changed its requirements regarding this since 2015 by any chance?
