good thing I'm not still on dial-up, but how large is that ****ing .wav file? - it would take hours

I'm sorry, I'm going to find it very difficult to say anything polite about this **** website -- it's downloaded 100MB so far - I shouldn't have pressed the back button in the middle ... oh, sorry, I exaggerate 99,514,154 bytes

Dear Mr Travelsim, may I suggest you follow the example of the associated OnZoone site, and allow people the option to turn off the monotonous dance music - we're not stoned, and a 56MB sound file is beyond a joke.

As for the SIM, I read some of the rates on the other site - starting at around ?0.45 per minute

- NB the option to turn off the sound is at the top right.

While I would never use this card in the US, I notice that incoming calls in Japan are free??? This is interesting. Help me out here, my German is a bit rusty. Does it say the TravelSIM's number is based in Germany?

andy 13-12-2005 02:40

No, DRN, the site is of Austrian origin and the SIM has a +372 Estonian number

there's an English button on the bottom of http://www.onzoone.at/

So using CBW that would be $0.22/min to call from the US to a mobile roaming in Japan. Not bad... I also notice that Iraq is €0.17 /min. While I don't plan to go there any time this century, it might be of interest to some other folks.

Apart from the spamming (which we don't like very much) and the terrible techno sound of the Austrian site, this offer sounds quite interesting, not for all countries, but at least for some.

The operator they are using is Estonian EMT, which should have quite good roaming agreements since it's the biggest one in its country.

Calls to Estonian mobiles are quite expensive with most carriers here in the UK, so that, presumably, is how they're offering free or low-cost inbound roaming in many Western European countries...

Just another product with technology like UM and 09 :).
And just like UM has no free incoming in FL, in TravelSIM incoming in Estonia are not free either :P.

BTW, is this the first inernational SIM (except for a specific case of gt-sim) with free incoming in Russia?

AndreA 13-12-2005 16:28

i don't trust very much in that document... pay attention about Italy and San Marino for example.

They wrote that you pay 9 ct. for incoming calls in Italy, but not in San Marino.
They say "free incoming calls" in RSM but this is impossible because San Marino does NOT have any GSM/3G network! In RSM you have only TIM (brand TMS, but it's the ITALIAN network with code 222 01), Vodafone Italy and wind!

So if you pay in Italy you pay in RSM too because it's the same thing!

Same mistake with France and Monaco... France is free, but not Monaco! This is impossible, too...

Not necessarily. Remember that Monaco mobile = Kosovo mobile & Hop :).

AndreA 13-12-2005 16:50

No, it's impossible :P

Hop has a virtual prefix of Monaco thanks to Areeba (ex Spacetel Ghana) while Monaco Telecom has coverage only in Kosovo, not at home.
In Monaco you have only the coverage of french networks (in front of the public pool Wind too :D ), so it's impossible that you can pay there and not in France.

Hmm, but my guess is that the price list may be arranged by prefixes, not actual coverages :). Of course, I don't still know then what to think about RSM...

The Mexico (and Argentina) prices are quite incredible - more than just about any national roaming sim. If it's accurate of course - they may have just misplaced the decimal point. :-)

Coverage in Tokelau is impressive - even gsmworld doesn't know there is a gsm network there...

Why do these roaming sims always get launched by companies with zero knowledge of geography and phone networks, with websites full of errors? Makes it impossible to trust anything they say.

See page 8, n. 2 (Terms and Conditions) of the user manual:

Any idea of what this means? I don't recall ever seeing any other operator having a "separate sms number"

Also surprising to me!

AFAIK incoming data and fax calls require extra numbers in GSM. But SMS?

Even http://www.cellular-news.com/coverage/ (which contains info about non-GSM/3G networks too) doesn't know about any mobile netwrok in Tokelau :D. Perhaps some NZ op works there?

Don't care about geography. It was just funny to me when Hop assigned Slovakia nad Ukraine to Asia :). But but telling rubbish about impossible roamings is in fact horrible.

The old Buytel had already this system

Your number for incoming calls and a FL1's number for sms

No... the incredible thing is that I remember very well that Tokelau last year decided to decline a mobile coverage because not useful for them. And now it's very nice to read about international roaming there :P

Also in Tokelau you can use satellite system :bye2:

andy 14-12-2005 21:07

maybe Tokelau is NZ coverage - the Virgin Mobile Australia website lumps them together anyway

OK, but calling FL number was also possible? This double number in Buytel was just about call diverting AFAIK.
If I divert all calls from my landline to my mobile, I'll have the same result :).
