Bangkok Sim Card for data roaming
Will dtac sim card support Huawei pocket wifi?
I will stay in Bangkok for a week. I need to buy a data sim for data roaming. Which sim is suitable? Will dtac ok for it? Thanks a lot |
Depends on which Huawei pocket WiFi you own as there are different versions supporting different frequency bands.
Here we recently discussed all Thai networks and their frequency bands. |

This time, I want to try dtac, but I don't know will dtac support Huawei e583c. I know dtac is gsm1800 |
The E583C supports 3G/UMTS at 900 and 2100 MHz and some sources also mention 1900 MHz.
i-mobile 3GX is a MVNO on the TOT3G network which runs its 3G/UMTS network at 2100 MHz. However their 3G/UMTS network's coverage is pretty limited: iLocation (check "3G signal" for the coverage overlay) With the E583C you cannot access DTAC's 3G/UMTS network since it is operated at 850 MHz. You would only be ablte to access DTAC's 2G/GSM network which runs at 1800 MHz. Therefore you should only use i-mobile 3GX/TOT3G or AIS, which may provide better coverage than TOT3G/imobile 3GX: ??????????????????????? 3G Internet ????? | AIS 3G Mobile Internet |

Thanks a lot. I shall try AIS then. Would you mind telling me which AIS pre-paid sim package is suitable for me? I will stay at Bangkok for about 5-6 days. Besides, where can I buy AIS data sim? Would you mind also teach me how to set the APN? And, how to activate the AIS data sim. Many thanks, KIM |
Sorry, I have never been to Thailand and my recent attempt to get an overview of Thai prepaid SIM packages for a friend who flew to Thailand was unsuccessful as most operators' websites are only partly translated into English.
I only found out that from AIS there is a product called "GSM Advance" and another one called "1-2-Call" but I don't know which of them is prepaid, what the SIM card costs and where you can buy it. I also found this overview of data packages, of which some are only available to "GSM Advance" customers while others are only available with the "1-2-Call" tariff: ??????? Internet Edge, 3G ??? Wifi ?????????? | AIS Mobile Internet Also it seems like these packages can only be ordered by USSD codes, which you can only enter with a phone but not with your Huawei pocket router. Finally these are the APN settings for AIS: APN: internet username: ais password: ais I gave you a link for a tutorial here only three months ago. |
Thanks again.
I have used i-mobile 3GX for two times in the past. It's cheap and worth for just few days travellers. You are right, most Thai operators' websites are in Thai. It is very hard to get information. Even I am in Bangkok, their staff can't give me enough information about that. Maybe I still need to use imobile 3GX this time, but... really want to try other one. |
i-mobile is a good choice if you are in and around bangkok. 3G data is available nearly everywhere, AIS is still a bit patchy.
You can buy any SIM on TOT 3G Network, i-mobile is only one of many providers using it. You can distinguish these SIM cards as they are advertised with 1 GB traffic = 100 THB (2.5 Euro) Chris |

You can get a 3G NETSIM card and tell the counter to activate it including the needed tariff right away. You have the following choice (+ mabye some nice promotions): 149 baht: 150 MB - *133*40# 350 baht: 1 GB - *133*41# 550 baht: 2 GB + unlimited wifi hotspot usage - *133*42# 799 baht: Unlimited, 3 GB highspeed, afterwards 384kbps, unlimited wifi - *133*43# if you want to activate yourself make sure you have enough balance and dial the code behind the info above (e.g. *133*42# for 2 GB package) coverage can be seen here: ??????????????????????? 3G Internet ????? | AIS 3G Mobile Internet For TOT3G (i-mobile etc) coverage can be seen here: iLocation |

Have you try dtac? I'm now thinking that.... maybe I am simply use smartphone (iPhone or Samsung Note), just purchase the Happy Tourist Package,199Baht/7 days unlimited. And then sharing to other devices. However, I don't know the speed... I just think, compare with i-mobile 3gx, it might be faster and stable. |
As far as i know DTAC has the weakest 3G coverage, the only advantage over i-mobile is that it has fallover to 2G network when there is no coverage available. As the DTAC 3G is on 850 MHz my handsets can not use it so i could not perform any live check.

same problem for me: 3G on 850 MHz.
But i often use the TrueMove InterSIM which has good data rates and 1 THB/min to all main international destinations. EDGE works quite good with them... |

As I know, Truemove has TRUE-H SIM Pack, 49bth/1 day unlimited. Do you think it is a good option? And, this SIM is for smartphone only? |
i have a smartphone and use wifi tethering when needed.
You can use all data options on all true SIM cards, so you can buy the one for cheapest calls and just activate the day package as well... There are 2 day packages: 39 THB = unlimited EDGE 49 THB = unlimited EDGE + a few hours on wifi hotspots to activate send D1 or D2 by sms to 9789 Chris |

I got it. "2" one day packages |

BTW, I have sent you a message :) |
Interesting thread...good info.
I will be visiting Bangkok next week as well and I was interested in finding out a few options: 1. I have a I9020T from Samsung(Nexus S)...which only operates on 3G on 900 / 1700 / 2100 MHz UMTS...Will I be able to receive 3G on either AIS/DTAC/Tru? 2. I also have an ASUS TF101 which doesnt have a sim card capability...so I need a portable WIFI solution as well...looks like AIS has a Pocket WIFI which offers this---any other options? I dont want to be stuck with EDGE or with HotSpots for sure. Thanks for the info. K |
Check out this post, according to which your Nexus S would work on AIS and on TOT3G.
By the way Huawei has recently released the first pentaband 3G handset running Android, the Ascend P1, which virtually supports all the global 3G frequencies used today (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100). It only lacks some Japanese frequencies (700 and 1700), which are of minor relevance. |
Thanks..
Any idea about the pocket wifi or something similar? |
As there isn't any pocket wifi supporting all the Thai frequency bands we can hardly recommend any pocket wifi unless you contain potential operators.
|
From what I saw...AIS is the only one that offers the Pocket Wifi(which believe is the HUAWEI_E583X). It seems that it works at 7.2MB/s.
Also, I just saw something confusing on AIS's website...that their 900 frequency band for 3G is for CDMA? I thought it was all GSM?? Any ideas? |
they refer to WCDMA which is another word for 3G/UMTS, which is strictly spoken not GSM/2G.

GSM in contrast is the predecessor standard that is also called "2G". UMTS evolved from the GSM standard, that's why UMTS devices are always backwards compatible to GSM. Both are incompatible with the American CDMA/EV-DO standard which is also called "3G". 2G, 3G and 4G are rather non-technical terms that describe the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation of radio standards which are not necessarily compatible with each other. |
Please note that in Thailand you can also buy tariffs and devices for CDMA / EV-DO network. But from TOT and not from AIS.

I found a few more that support 21 Mbps/s here: ???????????? 3G Router ???? ??? ??? ???? ??? ??????? ???? I'll try and get one of these assuming that they are unlocked and can utilize some of the 42Mbps speeds being offered by AIS or TOT? As far as the sim for the cell goes--it seems like both AIS or TOT would work as AIS would give me 3g on 900 and TOT on 2100(both which the Nexus S supports). Anyone have real world experience with which of these services truly have good coverage at those speeds? I plan to stay in Bangkok throughout with little or no travel to other parts of the country. |
In any case buy a mobile hotspot from Huawei or ZTE as most of the other stuff is of low quality. Unfortunately I am not aware of any mobile hotspot that would support American 3G frequency bands besides the Thai ones, so whichever device you select it will be rather useless back in the Staats. There are only USB modems that support all five global UMTS frequencies (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100) and thus are called "pentaband", such like the Huawei E369.
|
Understood...my intention was purely to use this device for travel in Thailand.
