O2 Germany

Hi guys! I'm going to spend 6 days in Germany, and I need some info about o2 sim cards. I read they have really good offers for international calls (to Italy, in this case), that is 29 cent/€ per minute.
My questions are:

1) where can I buy the sim card? Assuming I'm going to spend about 5 hours in Frankfurt airport

2) do I need a german address? And how can I activate it?

3) how much airtime do I have after activation, and where can I buy top-ups?

Thank you, you're really precious! :)

Edoardo

O2 don't have good international rates at all. The provider you mean is based on the O2 network though and is called Fonic. You'll find all requested information in the appropriate thread - just use the search function!

callfan 11-07-2009 13:26

But...i found it in the O2 page, here on PrePaidGSM.net!
Intenational calls to EU/USA are billed 0.29€, according to PrePaidGSM: O2 (Germany)

With Fonic Italian fixed lines can be called for € 0,09/min and SMS to Italy cost € 0,19 instead of € 0,29 andSo better go for Fonic!

callfan 11-07-2009 15:21

Ok! Anyway, my questions up there remain the same... :)

You can also have a look on blauworld - the call home SIM
Italian fixed 7,9 ct, mobiles 29 ct, all german landline and mobile networks 15ct/min.
Buy in electronic retailers such as Media Markt, Saturn etc..
Registration online, address required, but no check. Just use a Hotel's address or a friend's one.

Top up with cash vouchers, available for instance in cigarette stores, filling stations, Norma supermarkets, Globus and others.

or regular bank transfer (account shown on website)

or Bancomat, choose eplus network, maybe ask somebody with a german bancomat card.

ATTENTION : There is also blau Die gόnstige Prepaid SIM-Karte von Ihrem Mobilfunk Discounter for use within Germany.
DO NOT MIX, you need a BLAUWORLD SIM.

callfan 11-07-2009 23:54

Oh thanks, that's an interesting deal! Do you think I could find them in an airport?

9eor9 12-07-2009 08:25

I cannot say if you'll find them in an airport shop, it may be possible.
But you can order online on the blauworld website and have it sent to your friend or hotel, just transfer 9,90€ to their bank account with the remark of the number you have chosen. The address given must be a german address as far as I know.
They send by post as a letter but it it may take a week. All details they confirm via email.

You can recharge blauworld SIMs with any blau cash voucher. There are no different vouchers for blau and blauworld SIMs.

If you have given them your bank account or credit card data, you can also top up from your balance there (see website).

There's at least no shop of an official distibutor at FRA airport, who would sell Fonic, O2 or blauworld SIMs. Also the gasstations on the airport compound (Shell, Esso, BP) do not distribute SIM cards.

There's a Lidl store right next to the Frankfurt airport. You can buy a Fonic card and top-up cards over there...

How is 'O2' pronounced?

Since this thread has O@ in its name: How is 'O2' pronounced in UK and Europe? I kept hearing in the news last week "Oh-two Arena".
Is it pronounced 'Oxygen'?

thanks

petkow 12-07-2009 18:37

Oxygen would be good! I thought that is what they would call it too! Unfortunately in UK at least it is "Oh-two". I think in Germany it is "oh-zwei" most of the time.

o2 is owned by Telefonica so here it is just called "Movistar".

inquisitor 12-07-2009 19:08

@VladS
There is a distance of 5 km between the airport and that Lidl store.

@petkow
In Germany it's also pronounced in the English way. Even in commercials they say "oh two" - never heard someone to germanize it to "oh zwei".

Where I live 5km is 'right next to...'. I might have made the wrong assumption that our fellow forum member was going to rent a car.

callfan 12-07-2009 19:46

Ehm...not exactly...
I'll be on a school trip, and I won't be able to go wherever I want...unfortunately! :D

Thanks for the advices anyway, I hope I'll be able to find a blauworld or Fonic sim card at least during one of those 6 days!

You're always precious. :)

inquisitor 12-07-2009 20:04

He wrote he would spend 5 hours at FRA, so I guess he wants just a SIM to call home during his short stay.

callfan 12-07-2009 20:48

Actually, 5 hours in Frankfurt, and 6 days in Berlin. :)

petkow 12-07-2009 22:03

I actually think there is a Bus which goes from the airport to Kelsterbach. I used to know someone who lived in Schwanheim which was 5mins away from the airport by bus. That is close to Kelsterbach. However, the bus is not that frequent.

Rather than going to Lidl, if you have 5 hours in FRA, hop on a S-Bahn (metro) from the basement of the airport and you can be in the centre (at Hauptbahnhof or Hauptwache) in a little more than 10 mins. Plenty of options around there for picking up various SIM's. Other than that, there will be plenty of options in Berlin.

Thanks to Inquisitor too about the pronounciation of o2 auf Deutsch! ;)

callfan 12-07-2009 22:09

I really thank all of you, guys! At least, whenever and wherever I'll find a reseller, I'll know what to buy! ^^

Fonic SIM for sale

I just went shopping to my local Real supermarket and while waiting in the very long line I decided to pick up a Fonic SIM for € 9.95 for the case Callfan or any other forum member wants one. It's brand new, unregistered and if you activate it before July 31st you'll get an initial credit of € 9.99 (instead of only € 6.75), so the SIM is practically for free.

I just ask for the purchase price of € 9.95 + postage costs for a registered letter (€ 2.75 within Europe / € 3.75 rest of the world) + PayPal fees.

So in total Europeans would have to pay € 13.30 and non-Europeans € 14.59. If you are interested, PM me!
