Voipcheap.com and other Betamax sms callback

just introduced today

Quote:

14.05.2007 SMS Callback!

You can now initiate a call via SMS.
Text the number you want to call to +447624800947. We will call you on your mobile, and connect you to that number.
So no need to be around a computer anymore.

The number has to be in international format, for example +44123456789.

You can also sent a vCard. Simply sent the vCard to +447624800947, and we will connect you with the main number.

Call charges will be settled via your VoipCheap account.

And a 5c connection charge

Cheaper trigger sms messages could be sent on another phone, eg with a Vyke, mobisms or similar account, as long as that account was set up for the sender ID of the phone receiving the callback.

For UK readers, as well as anyone roaming with an O2 UK prepay SIM on My Europe Extra, it's also worth looking at ReturnCall, which uses callback that dials a trigger number, and rates that start at 5 or 6p for int'l landlines

meir 15-05-2007 13:35

I disagree Andy, on Phone number registration with Betamax. I have UK number regiterd with VOIPDISCOUNT.COM using Czech adrress and Cypriot one on POIVY.COm using German adrress. No problem with registration. What more, when calling from the computer VOIPDISCOUNT remits my UK phone as ID to calling party. Nice extra.

andy 15-05-2007 14:40

You are right, and I just came here to correct myself

What is not possible is to use their foreign callthrough access numbers, so I made the mistake of guessing that also applied to this.

I've just added a German number to my UK VC account, and used the callback

Voipbuster have just added the same sms callback facility, so it would not be a surprise to see others soon. JustVoip would be nice, but I think less likely ...

andy 31-07-2007 12:27

I read this morning that JustVoip has introduced sms callback

And apparently on FreeCall and Voipdiscount as well

But not all Betamax brands, it seems

Where did you read this Andy. I'll be very happy if this is true. BUT I can't find information and instructions how to do it on justvoip page.

When logged in to the account on the website, see on the menu down a bit on the left - Make VoIP calls via your mobile phone.

Depending on your country (well, the country you set the account up in), there may be first a description of using a callthrough access. But the sms facility will be there for all accounts

Use your credit for regular calls from your mobile phone

No matter where you are, you can now always benefit from the JustVoip rates and make cheap mobile calls just by sending an SMS!

Here's how it works:

1). Make sure you have entered your mobile phone number in your personal details.

2). Send an SMS containing the number you would like to call including the national prefix (e.g. a number in the UK send +44 123 456 789) to +44 762 480 2809 (save this number in your mobile phone under JUSTVOIP so you can always use it!)

3). Your phone rings, pick up, wait for reply and start talking!

DRNewcomb 07-09-2007 23:52

CBW has an alternate provider that has a SMS trigger system.

I should try it with my GLOBALSIM card.
This card don't support CLIP.

Is this number (+447624800947) supposed to work for any verified cell phone and any Betamax client? I tried to use it from United States for 2 different cell phone numbers (US and Russian) and my client is Voipdiscount.
I plugged into the Voipdiscount profile my cell phone number and verified it.
However, when I send the message with the number I want to call I get the reply: "Your mobile phone was not found in our database, in the voip client go to Tools -> Options -> CallerID and verify your number first!"

Does it take some time for the cell phone to appear in the database, or I have to send the message to another number?

andy 15-01-2008 11:49

There's a different number for each brand. You can find the information when logged in to your account, as described above; Voipdiscount shows +447624802855

Wellwisher 16-01-2008 16:03

Thank you very much! This number really seems to work! I wonder whether there exists a US number to send such messages (since a message to UK number is considered as international and can not be sent for less then 15c per message).

If you mean this:

,

I could not find "Make VoIP calls via your mobile phone" button in my version of VoipDiscount (though it is the latest one) or anywhere on the web-site. The only thing I can find about mobile phones is on the main web-page of Voip client in the top menu on the right you can choose "More -> Mobile". But this will give you for some countries (US is not in the list) the local rate number that will allow you to call through it with Voip rates. Nothing about sms callback... Sounds strange but that's how it is.

andy 16-01-2008 20:18

sorry, my earlier description was badly written, now edited

I mean when logged into your account details on the website, not in the client program itself

Wellwisher 16-01-2008 20:46

I still don't see it... But anyway, this is not very important.
Thank you again for this info!

Ichwardort 19-05-2008 10:34

when using this betamax SMS callback via a roaming-SIM-card as e.g. globalsim there is one problem I was not able to solve until now:

They don't broadcast the phone-number when sending a SMS. Therefore I can't use my globalsim for triggering a SMS callback. Using another cell phone for sending a trigger SMS is also not possible because betamax only allows to register one phone number....

Is there any solution for handling this shortcoming?

Thanks,

kr A.

andy 19-05-2008 20:23

I suspect Betamax have discontinued the sms callback facility; I've had no reply to a couple of queries about it.

I don't understand your remarks. Surely all SIM cards send the phone number on an sms? If you meant using Betamax to send an sms, then your ID can indeed be set on the account, or indeed more than one and then choose which to send. Most global SIMs don't support data yet, so using a different SIM one to trigger calls is quite likely

I just it yesterday here in france with Voipcheap.
still works! :)

wilczu 05-10-2008 19:30

does it still work?

I downloaded betamax for my nokia n82 and I wonder if it still works..

It's fine software, cause webcalldirect.com offers free sms, however I can't send the sms..

What is more, I can't write correctly .. e.g button 3DEF - I can only make D or 3 by holding..

The main question is does betamax still work? Maybe you guys know any good software for sending sms? I search for something simple like betamax, because it has really low kB transfer:P

andy 05-10-2008 20:47

This thread was mainly about sms triggering of callback. I think this was suspended or stopped working ** on most of the Betamax brands, though they did launch a brand dedicated to this, called text4calls , which I'd forgotten to add to this thread

** edit - I gather that some sms callback is working again

If you're trying to send sms from the Betamax voipclient program, then yes this should still be possible, though I haven't done so recently. You have options of switching between predictive text or multiple key press (e.g. 3 x '3' = f) within the program, just like other text entry on the phone.

But you ought to check webcalldirect rates, as most of the Betamax free text offers have disappeared, and the others aren't as cheap as they used to be.

There are several other possibilities, which are discussed on this thread - it starts about sms rates on SIM cards, but digresses on to mobile Java clients, data costs and so on

Can anyone tell me which Betamax clones currently do SMS callback? I need to try and set one up again. Text4calls seems to just reroute to telediscount.

andy 06-03-2009 00:59

Yep, text4calls was announced to be discontinued a while ago, and the website disappeared a couple of months ago; in between, a message said existing accounts could still use up their credit

same brands I mentioned posts 1 3 & 4, or I assume so, but they aren't described in the account any more

I posted the numbers somewhere - I'll find them and edit this

petkow 06-03-2009 11:15

Yes I noticed that they aren't advertised anymore. From what I can see all SMS triggers start with +44762480xxxx. The ones that I have seen listed here are as follows:

Voipcheap.com 0947
Justvoip.com 2809
voipdiscount.com 2855

Does anyone know of any others? I do not have any credit remaining with any of these and am hesitant to load credit until I am sure this will work, and know of all the options for optimal pricing strategy.

Thanks in advance!

andy 06-03-2009 13:19

Freecall +447624800948

Justvoip +447624802809

Voipbuster +447624800946

Voipcheap +447624800947

Voipdiscount +447624802855

Text4calls was +447624802808

petkow 06-03-2009 13:55

Excellent information! Clear and concise. Thank you!

Just one more question. Does being a reseller (30EUR plus) entitle you to move credit around at will?

2011 update

This would be very useful because finding internet to initiate a call is a real pain when you're traveling. Thread was in 2009... anything changed?

I have tried the VoIPCheap number and also Continental's SMS Call service. Can't get either to work as yet.

So instead what I have to do at the moment is find a local SIM card shop, buy a card, make sure they setup data on it and see it working and then use that to browse to voipcheap.co.uk with images turned off(a WAP site would be handy!!) to start a call - annoying.

What I will look at doing now is using a SMS to email service to my own website that will use Curl (or webscraper bot) to place the call for me.

Thanks for posting the numbers though, I will experiment.

@jago25 I am using regual callback. Setup your own asterisk based server, freepbx for example on a vps. You can install any betamax, these days dellmont brand. You should get a vps for around $10, 256 or 512 mb.

You need to have 1 phone to trigger the callback, 1 to receive. Dual sim phone might work if you like them.

Error Trying To Install Freepbx 2.2.1 and Asterisk 1.2.15 | FreePBX

I have to run apache as the asterix user. I'm not sure I want to go as far as that as I already have a webserver... unless I can run an additional webserver on another port... all a bit over the top perhaps

MobileMan 11-01-2011 21:25

I use the following method to initiate a callback, using Nindino: Cheap calls to India, Pakistan, Srilanka, Saudi Arabia, USA from anywhere in the world , after registering with them you register the number you will be calling from in your account, you then call a callback number they provide, after dialing this number you will hear it ring once then disconnect (no charge incurred) seconds later you are called back on the same phone number you called from, after telling you your balance you can then dial the number you wish to call. The call rates while not the cheapest for some countries are comparable with the Betamax brands.

bbob 12-01-2011 20:39

@Mobileman this is a nice solution but I have found that sometimes on some foreign networks the caller id does not get tranferred. This means that when initiating a callback the system would see anonymous and no callback would be triggered.

This is the reason I setup a trunk in my pbx that will trigger a callback when being called by any number. I keep the number private so only I know it.

Did this after some frustration some time ago because of the anonymous caller id. In the logs I saw the call at the time I made the trigger call but no caller id.

For astersik you can get free did numbers from many places and use this to trigger the callback.
