O9 v. United Mobile Question

I have a UM sim that I used last year in Europe. I am returning to Europe this year and with Callbackworld's rate increase to Lichtenstein numbers I am wondering if O9 is a cheaper option? How does the O9 card work?

Are there any other recommended calls for traveling to France and Spain?

MATHA531 23-04-2007 17:11

o9 is based in Iceland....since o9 has not generated the large number of subscribers that UM has, there have been evidently no outcry by telcoms about using callbackworld and elinea with it. Currently enlinea charges 11¢/minute for the same service cbw charged 14¢/minute before its 108% increase effective today for calls to Liechtenstein mobiles.

Having said that, I have used o9 quite a bit for outgoing but still preferred UM for incoming as my ld company in the USA, AT&T on its $1/month foreign plan only charges 11¢/minute for calls to Liechtenstein mobiles and my landline carrier does allow remote call forwarding to be set to foreign carriers. But o9 does not support voicemail, text messaging and has one big big glitch in its coverage namely it does not have any agreement with any Swiss carrier so o9 is useless in Switzerland (although they do support New Zealand which is a glaring hole in UM coverage).....

So choose what you need...for outgoing as of today, and obviously with all the other garbage going on, as long as Switzerland is not an integral part of your European trip, o9 is best for making calls to say the United States from Europe.

Thank you!

Only a layover in Switzerland so not neccesary to base the decision on that.

If I use a O9 card, do I need to use CBW or Enlinea? How can people call me from the US economically?

...you don't have to use enlinea or cbw but their prices are much much cheaper than using the naitive calling rates of o9 or whatever carrier you are using.

People can reach you the usual way by calling your number in iceland which you can provide or pin2dest on cbw or you can get a dedicated US toll free number on enlinea..or you can check voicestick and check their rates to iceland mobiles.

Great thank you.

One last question..Is O9 the best option card out there for travel to Spain and France?

There are several options out there. You may want to compare them to see which one suits you the best. Most of the international cards offer free incoming in those 2 countries anyway. The IOM sims give you a UK number. So, you probably want to base your descision on how easy it is for people to reach you and how much out going calls are.

I have received my 09 SIM with its icelandic number.
SIM was not compatible with my Treo600 but was compatible with my new HTC Tytn :-)
Incoming calls are free (140 countries) and thus, I'm placing my calls through Hiboo (www.hiboo-mobile.com). Calls are 0,40€/min to many countries (+80) (landline). Cheaper than 09 prices.

Of course, it means "two callback". But it's worth.

I do the same with callbackworld - for 11 Eurocent to german landlines and 30 Eurocent to german mobiles... or 11 Eurocent to US-mainland. Cheaper than 09 and cheaper than hiboo...

I checked the tariffs you give but they are for calling from a landline of your home country !?!? I'm sorry to say that it makes no comparison possible with calls from a mobile when abroad (roaming) which I was considering because it is the subject of this topic.

Nope.

Check the calculator:

FROM Iceland cellular TO Germany landline = 16 Us-ct = 11,7 Euro-ct
FROM Iceland cellular TO germany cellular = 41 us-ct = 30 Euro-ct

3 questions:

1) Does the 09 sim use callback for all calls?

2) Is ANYONE having success these days with callbackworld?

3) Anyone expect callbackworld to raise rates on iceland mobile before summer's over?

1) Yes

2) Yes, but not always (the PIN2DEST to 09 works fine, callbacks come about 50% of the time these days, tested from germany)

3) no idea

Dster 26-04-2007 21:49

Thanks for the help.

Also, how recent is the information in this thread about no service for 09 in Switzerland? I'll be spending some time there this summer (at least three weeks), so no service there would be a deal breaker for me.

Edit: I just spoke with a representative from 09. He was very surprised to hear that the 09 SIM doesn't work in Switzerland. He offered to send a free card to someone in Switzerland to test with, but I don't know anyone there!

Then he said he'd try to check on this himself and would get back to me. I guess we'll see what he comes back with.

oatmeallover 30-04-2007 19:19

i am now confused. since my UM card is significantly more expense. i am unsure of which card to purchase for my visit to spain and france..looking for free incoming with perhaps CBW or enlinea usage
