Hello,
I just tried my UM Sim in my unlocked cingular phone. I used callbackworld to test incoming calls from a landline using the pin2dest. Worked fine.

I was unable to make calls though, with the phone saying, "stop" call incomplete or something. I dialed, 001-909-XXX-XXXX. no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas why I can receive calls but not make them?

MATHA531 31-05-2006 16:15

In certain countries, attempts are made to block access to callbackworld by blocking incoming calls from them....that is one possibility.

Also you might try to make the call from the UM menu on the phone, some phone models do have a bit of a problem...try changing the roaming network by going into your configuration menu and selecting a different roaming partner...I know some in Germany have reported one of the networks blocks UM calls but another doesn't.

You might try + ilo 00.

Can you obtain your balance? If you can do that, then you should be able to dial out.
Also, you might try dialing WITHOUT CBW. I know that cost more, but if you must you must.

with Callbackworld, you don't dial "00" at the beginning of a call. To call the US, you dial "1" and the number, e.g. "12125551212."

oatmeallover 31-05-2006 18:40

thanks!

but i cant even call out w/out callbackworld..just calling from the UM number..do you think because im using it in the USA its only picking up a cingular signal? i also have another siemans a57 phone, but that does not work here in the US at all.

MATHA531 31-05-2006 19:09

Ah ha...perhaps now the problem.....

First of all you should not be using united mobile in the USA...you pay astronomically high rates to receive calls so cbw costs you more than $1/minute...

Secondly the system, I think, doesn't recognize the call. On USA networks the international calling prefix is 011 not 00...of course the + sign takes care of that...you should be dialing +1 909 xxx xxxx but why are you fooling around with it in the United States...the fact pin2dest worked indicates the sim is working fine.

Stop throwing away your money and don't fool with it in the United States.

Can you obtain a balance?

You may have to use the SIM menu to dial out. Ditto with regular calls - I had a treo and you could NOT just dial. I had to use the SIM tools or SIM menu.

Agree with MATHA531.... stop wasting $ and time in US.

If you have the UM card in and the phone displays CINGULAR, you have service and are ROAMING on CINGULAR. UM has roaming agreements.

If you can obtain a balance, you are in business. That means you are sending and receiving on the network using your UM card.

To be clear -- with my Treo, the PHONEBOOK on the phone was useless for dialing out. It was possibile to dial from the SIM card. My Riiing card and I am guessing the UM card has built-in SIM tools & dialing short cuts/short codes. I had to use those to dial out.

Good luck.

I think that simple A57 will be much better when using UM SIM than this "bells-and-whistles" featured Treo :).
As it was told on this forum, Siemens phones are rather good for UM.
Recently I bought as a spare phone an oldie C35 - it dials "directly" on UM, without using SIM menu. My sister has an AX75 which works perfectly with UM, too.

Oatmeallover did not say what phone he had. I was only saying that my treo had problems dialing out -- as a possibility for the source of his seeming problem dialing out. My Nokia(s) and Motos never had dialing issues.

Often the simplest phones are the best for UM and the like.

Yes, I know that it was you who had problems with Treo - just put together my thoughts in a (too) compact form :).

As to simplicity, funny enough that among phones (all rather simple) possesed by me and members of my family, only Siemenses are fully compatible with UM. Menu based dialing is required for: Nokia 3310, Moto T205, Trium Eclipse and some Samsung. Not a real problem however :)

My UPDATE:

We have been using the phone in Amsterdam and Berlin now and no problems. CBW 800 pindest has been great and easy for US callers to contact us.

only hiccup is with the phone accidently turning off by itself. but other than, anyone going to multiple countries in europe and has the patience to figure out this system out, its A++ especially with its competitive pricing.

Thank to everyone for weiging in.

I have a new issue....my UM card says i have 1 euro left on it..how could I be eating up these minutes? i am using CBW

snaimon 06-06-2006 18:06

Why don't you call their customer support.

I sold someone HERE and ECOWORLD Riiing knock-off and he gave the card to his parents. He also complained about low balance to me. What am I to do?

Call or email their customer support.

Did you call voicemail? That is NOT free. Some other utilities are also not free.

Just an idea.

Also, good idea to check the balance FREQUENTLY. at this point after each call!

I am concerned cuz I too am heading to EU soon.
