correct, thats vodafone IT, but without that hassle with italian code fiscale and stuff.

This is also known as "breaking the rules". I suppose they are providing one for you, but which documents will they send to Vodafone, since you need also to provide an identity card?

For €6 a day, I think I'd still be tempted to only use that in places visited for only a day or so, and get some local ones as well

In Lithuania for example you can get 500 MB for a month for 5 Lt, which is about €1.50, with Ežys; if you need more than that get more than one SIM (you need to add 1 Lt credit to have enough for the activation calls then the bundle)

For the UK you can find data SIMs for 3 on eBay or Amazon which work out about £3 or £4 a gigabyte, use one once throw away and start on the next

Just local use, both of these, not roaming, but if you're in a country for a few days getting a SIM isn't too tricky, so maybe just use that roaming one for the first day

yes sure, but might be useful for business travellers who usually dont have the time and the nerves to buy a bunch of local cards and swap them around all the time. If i see what hilarious roaming bills our guys at work produce every month i might suggest them such a card as well..

I agree with Andy. For anything more than a day or so in one place, a local sim is definitely the way to go. For example when I travel to Nigeria, I have a local MTN sim. I just sign up for one of the several data packages. For example, 500/MB for a month at a cost of about $3. The 3G speeds are awesome as well. The I tether to my netbook and use skype/voipcheap to call the US for dirt cheap.
