Yes, UM requires a chargable use every 9 months. But OP said calls still go to VM though. Which he can probably still check from a land line. I would think he would have received an appropriate message if the sim has been deactivated.

I still believe the problem can be resolved with a manual selection of a roaming network....question for the OP, the last time you turned the phone on in the USA, who was the roaming partner, T Mobile or Cingular?

First thing I'd do is a manual network search to see if the phone can locate the networks.

I tried my SIM in an unlocked phone here in Florida and it worked fine - I was able to dial out and get balance. So my SIM is OK. The problem is with the phone.
However - this is not the phone I am taking to Germany. The phone I am using is the one I purchased one month ago in Italy. It worked in Greece, Turkey & UK also. When I returned home to the USA I recall looking & seeing that I had service in Florida also (TMobile). However I am still in Florida & it is still showing "No Service". I am hoping that my phone will work fine when I arrive in Europe. FYI - It was a cheapo phone I bought in Italy - Motorola C118. GSM 900/1800. Does the job though. |
Hi. 900/1800 phones don't work in the US, as the US uses 850/1900. So, that seems to be your problem. You phone should work fine again with the UM SIM on your upcoming trip to Europe.

Good then. But, I do not think that phone would have showed tmobile in the USA. It should have showed exactly that. "No service" The 900/1800 band is not used here in the US. All along, the very knowledgeable folks here kept asking you to make sure you check the band, to verify that you are using 850/1900 or do a network search. Had you mentioned the phone model, it would have been obvious right away.
Anyway, good to know you figured it out. Quote:

It of course now all makes sense now...didn't think to ask about the frequency issue because my quick read of the post was that it had worked in the past in the US...didn't remember that the OP had brought a US model with him to Italy and had to go out and buy an inexpensive Italian dual band...
